How to Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 26.04

To install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 26.04, follow these steps.

Step 1 : Update.

sudo apt update

Step 2 : Install VirtualBox. The package is in multiverse.

sudo apt install virtualbox

Step 3 : Check the version.

VBoxManage --version

Step 4 : Download the Alpine virt ISO (change the URL if Alpine has a newer release).

mkdir -p ~/iso
wget -O ~/iso/alpine-virt-3.24.1-x86_64.iso https://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/v3.24/releases/x86_64/alpine-virt-3.24.1-x86_64.iso

Step 5 : Create the VM. --basefolder avoids a path with spaces.

mkdir -p ~/vbox
VBoxManage createvm --name alpine --ostype Linux_64 --register --basefolder $HOME/vbox
VBoxManage modifyvm alpine --memory 512 --cpus 1 --nic1 nat --boot1 dvd --boot2 disk
VBoxManage createmedium disk --filename $HOME/vbox/alpine/alpine.vdi --size 8192 --format VDI
VBoxManage storagectl alpine --name SATA --add sata --controller IntelAhci
VBoxManage storageattach alpine --storagectl SATA --port 0 --device 0 --type hdd --medium $HOME/vbox/alpine/alpine.vdi
VBoxManage storageattach alpine --storagectl SATA --port 1 --device 0 --type dvddrive --medium $HOME/iso/alpine-virt-3.24.1-x86_64.iso

Step 6 : Start the guest window from the CLI. The terminal returns to the prompt.

VBoxManage startvm alpine --type gui

You have installed VirtualBox on Ubuntu 26.04.
